Read To Succeed Wins

the 2009 Award for Excellence in Adult Literacy Service

The Board of Directors of the Tennessee Literacy Coalition is pleased to announce the winner of this year’s Award for Excellence in Adult Literacy Service.  The Award will be presented to Read To Succeed of Murfreesboro on Wednesday, May 27.  Read To Succeed was selected from a group of highly deserving applicants because of their outstanding program, “Families That Read, Succeed”.  For the first time, the Coalition is also recognizing a group of Finalists for the Award.  These three agencies have demonstrated significant successes:  Crockett County Adult & Continuing Education, with “BOOKS:  Books bring Opportunity and Orientation for Knowledge and Success”; Gibson County Adult Education, with “A Faster Track to GED Success”, and Friends of Literacy in Knox County with their 2008-09 Outreach Campaign.  Congratulations, all!

The focus of the winning program, “Families that Read, Succeed”, is on improving and strengthening the literacy skills of parents by engaging them in a reading program that emphasizes collaborative reading with one’s child or children. The goal of the program is for parents to gain valuable insight into literacy methodologies, as well as implementation strategies that will enable them to forge long-lasting reading relationships with their child or children. The program includes a separate adult-focused component where parents will have the opportunity to learn, discuss, and compare literacy strategies, deficiencies, and goals with a moderator trained to help generate appropriate responses. In addition, parents committed to “Families that Read, Succeed” have the opportunity to meet one-on-one with trained adult literacy tutors. The program was offered at three sites in Murfreesboro, partnered with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Rutherford County, Project HELP, and volunteer students from MTSU.   This is the second time that Read To Succeed has been selected for this Award.

The Award for Excellence in Adult Literacy Service was established by the Tennessee Literacy Coalition in 2005 to recognize the excellent work accomplished across the state by adult literacy provider agencies to help adults who lack basic literacy skills.  For more information on the Tennessee Literacy Coalition, please visit www.tnliteracy.org.
