Tennessee Service Provider Agencies

Every county in Tennessee is served by an Adult Education program funded through the Tennessee Department of Labor & Workforce Development.  These programs provide various classroom opportunities including Adult Basic Education, English as a Second Language, GED classes and practice testing, Families First, Even Start, and more.

There are also many privately funded non-profit agencies and programs providing adult literacy services either independently or in partnership with state AE programs.  Private provider agencies are listed below, organized by the county in which they are located This listing is still under construction, so please call the Coalition if you need a referral and don't find an appropriate agency listed here.  Please also notify us if you find any errors, or know of an agency that should be included.

The CVLC was formed in 1998 as a merger of the former Tri-County Literacy Council (founded 1976) and the Anderson County Adult Literacy Council (founded 1984).  The CVLC promotes quality literacy services to the residents of East Tennessee and provides support to local adult literacy provider programs, including the Anderson County Adult Basic Education program and the ESL program at the Oak Ridge YWCA computer lab.  Service area includes Anderson, Morgan and Scott counties.

Estoy Aprendiendo is a true Family Literacy program, whose clients are enrolled as complete family units.  EA serves Spanish-speaking families with children in the Metro School System.  Their primary purpose is to bridge the gap between home and school through four program components:  Adult English, Children's Education, PACT time, and Parent Time.  Families meet weekly on Saturday mornings at the Woodbine United Methodist Church on Nolensville Road for ESL instruction in classrooms as well as individual tutoring.  New family registration is open twice yearly - please contact the Director for information. Volunteers are needed throughout the year to help with tutoring adult students, and training is provided.  Anyone interested in volunteering should contact the Director.

The Putnam County Literacy Council has supported the Putnam County Adult Education Program since 1986.  Classes are open to Putnam County residents 18 years and older.  Free services include private one-on-one tutoring, and classes in GED preparation and ESL.  Enrichment courses in Sign Language, Computers, and Spanish are also available for a fee.

Since 1987, the Rhea County Adult Literacy Council has been working in a supportive role to raise awareness and funding for the Rhea County Adult Education Program.  Rhea County AE offers instruction for non-English speaking individuals, non-readers, basic skills in reading and math, GED preparation, and remedial studies for those preparing to enter college.

Since the 1990s, the Roane County Literacy Council has pursued its mission to raise awareness of the importance of literacy in the community and to assist in raising funds to support the Roane County Adult Education Program.  Roane County AE serves adults who wish to improve their educational skills by earning a GED, refreshing basic skills, or preparing to enter a post-secondary school or training.

Community Servants provides regular  ESL and GED classes as an adjunct of the Rutherford Co. Schools Adult Ed Program, and they also provide Basic Literacy and ESL one-on-one tutoring.  There is no fee.  Volunteer tutors are always needed and training is provided.

 

Community Servants is a 501(c)(3) non-profit agency that has been providing literacy and housing services for 11 years.  Their Community Kids program provides daily after school help with homework and reading to community children at no charge.

DeNeuville Learning Center assists women of all backgrounds and cultures in learning the skills they need to make positive choices for themselves and their families.  Classes offered include GED preparation, financial literacy, job readiness, computer studies, ESL, parent reading, and citizenship test preparation.  DeNeuville also offers enrichment classes and counseling.  Class schedules are flexible and child care is available at the discretion of the director.  There is a registration fee of $20, and tuition is $5 per month.  Volunteers are needed for a variety of assignments.  Visit the website or call the Center for more details.

The Literacy Council of Kingsport is a non-profit agency offering free basic literacy and ESL instruction to adults through one-on-one tutoring provided by trained volunteers.  The service area includes Sullivan County as well as the eastern portion of Hawkins County.  To enroll or to volunteer, please call for an appointment.  The Council also provides volunteer tutors in the local school system for children needing help with reading.

The PFLA is a non-profit educational agency working in partnership with the Bristol Public Library.  They provide help with basic literacy, GED preparation, ESL, and computer skills with one-on-one instruction at their facility.  Instruction is provided by staff and volunteers.  Although the agency is located in the state of Virginia, it serves the entire Bristol community, which includes a substantial portion of Sullivan County, Tennessee.  There is no charge for instruction, but contributions are accepted.  The PFLA is open year round, Monday through Friday, from 10am to 6pm.
